Moscato Reale: a very, very old local native vine
HISTORY
Moscato di Trani is the oldest and noblest D.O.C. wine in Apulia. Venetians were already trading this wine around 1000 AD, and also reached an agreement with the local Customs Authority. During the XIV century the Prince of Trani, Roberto d' Angiò, was so interested in this high quality wine to limit its exportations from the ports of his kingdom, thus arousing the Venetian merchant’ s anger. The famous travelling monk, Leandro Alberti, who wrote a monumental "Descrittione" of Italy in the XVI century, praised it by stating "tanto eccellente ch' è cosa molto delicata da gustare" i.e. "it's so excellent to be considered very fine to taste." Moscato di Trani continued to be increasingly sought after, and it became a D.O.C. wine in 1974. |
